WEMW 2024 opens the first round of calls for entries and announces its “quest for inspiration”
The preparation of the upcoming edition of When East Meets West (Trieste, January 21-24, 2024) has begun under a new keyword: inspiration. The entire programme of the future Trieste-based Co-Production Market will be shaped around the idea of stimulating our film industry to think differently, drawing inspiration from alternative artistic cross sections: from music to painting, shifting to philosophy and photography. The WEMW venue will therefore transform into a cross-cultural box where industry professionals will be able to naturally plunge themselves into a series of exhibitions and performances leading to the core of creative thinking.
In parallel to this ongoing inner creative revolution, WEMW will try to preserve and reinforce some of the historical features, with its main goal of keeping a unique ecosystem combining market activities, training programmes, professional empowerment and policy exchange. In the name of this continuity and for the second consecutive year, WEMW will dedicate the East & West focus to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine & Spain, Portugal, Latin America, bringing projects and professionals from these spotlight territories to Trieste, and building a safe space to facilitate a more creative and business exchange.
The consolidated activities such as the WEMW Co-Production Forum and the Work in Progress sessions will feature important novelties & changes. Thus starting from today it is possible to apply for three different sections focusing on outstanding projects in development and post-production.
Producers from Europe*, Latin America**, Canada, USA have time until October 18 to submit live-action features, creative documentaries and for the very first time short animated projects in development/financing stage to the WEMW Co-Production Forum.
All selected projects will compete for two main cash prizes of the value of 5,000€ each: the Film Center Serbia Development Award and the CICLIC WEMW Award (granted by the French Centre-Val de Loire Region). Thanks to the WEMW network of partners, the Co-Production Forum will also feature a series of other major awards, including the EAVE Producers Workshop scholarship, the brand-new Laser Film Post-Production Award, the Marché du Film Producers Network Badges, the #DocsConnect Taskovski Training Award and the Pop Up Film Residency Award. Moreover, all female identifying directors will be eligible for the EWA Network’s I HAVE A DREAM Award for Equality & Inclusion.

Starting from today and until November 20, there will also be the possibility to submit a project to the two work in progress sections of WEMW, and present selected scenes of your film in post-production to an exclusive panel of international decision makers, including festival programmers, sales agents, commissioning editors and distributors.
Last Stop Trieste will select documentaries in fine cut stage that have been presented in previous years at one of our partner events: Ex-Oriente Film, Balkan Discoveries at the Balkan Documentary Centre, Docu Rough Cut Boutique, ZagrebDox PRO, Baltic Sea Forum and When East Meets West. Alongside the programmes targeting projects in development and post-production, WEMW 2024 will soon launch a second round of call for submissions for the following workshops and labs: First Cut Lab Trieste, the consultancy programme designed for first and second feature films in the editing phase, the new Inspirational Labs as well as the EAVE Slate, a series of initiatives meant to encourage producers to develop different content, explore new business models and reinforce their company sustainability.
WEMW 2024 will once again be a mix of tradition & innovation, keeping a balance between the more established programmes and the need for a constant reinvention of the concept and role of co-production markets in our industry today.
More news will be announced soon, so stay tuned!
